Sally Kellerman, the prolific Academy Award-nominated actress who played Major Margaret “Hot Lips” O’Houlihan in the 1970 film “M*A*S*H,” has died, according to The Hollywood Reporter who cited her son. She was 84 years old.
Her son, Jack Crane, told the newspaper that Kellerman died Thursday morning after suffering from dementia.
Born in Long Beach, California, and raised in the Los Angeles area, Kellerman writes in her memoir, Read My Lips: Stories from a Hollywood Life, that she had been interested in entertainment from a young age.
Her acting career spanned over 60 years, with notable roles in the 1986 films Back to School and 1994’s Prêt-à-Porter, and she has appeared on TV shows such as Star Trek, Bonanza, and Maroon. “
Kellerman is best known for her work in the movie “M*A*S*H” which she was for Nominated for an Oscar For Best Supporting Actress. She also received a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2015 for her role in the TV series “The Young and the Restless”.
With her distinct deep voice, later in her career she provided voiceover work for commercials, narrative roles, and multiple cartoon series.
