Legendary Classic Rock Star Hints at Farewell Tour Before ‘Crawling Off to Die’

Date:

Pete Townshend, the iconic co-founder, guitarist, and principal songwriter of The Who has recently sent shockwaves through the music industry by hinting at the possibility of a farewell tour for the legendary rock band. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Townshend discussed the potential for The Who to embark on one final tour before, in his words, they “crawl off to die.”

The revelation came as Townshend discussed the revival of The Who’s groundbreaking rock opera, “Tommy,” which is set for a new run at the Nederlander Theatre. While promoting the production, Townshend delved into the band’s future, hinting at a grand finale for their storied career.

“It feels to me like there’s one thing The Who can do,” Townshend expressed to The New York Times. “And that’s a final tour where we play every territory in the world and then crawl off to die.” At 78 years old, Townshend acknowledged that financial considerations played a significant role in contemplating such a tour.

“I don’t get much of a buzz from performing with The Who,” Townshend admitted frankly. “If I’m really honest, I’ve been touring for the money. My idea of an ordinary lifestyle is pretty elevated.”

This isn’t the first time Townshend has broached the subject of The Who’s future. Towards the end of the previous year, he discussed plans with Record Collector magazine, indicating that he and bandmate Roger Daltrey were strategizing and considering various factors such as feasibility, profitability, and enjoyment.

Reflecting on his touring life, Townshend expressed a desire to avoid the fate of musicians who passed away while on the road. “I don’t want to be like one of these guys that dies on tour,” he revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2022. While Daltrey may have a different perspective, Townshend emphasized his own aspirations beyond the stage.

“Roger thinks that he wants to sing until he drops. That’s not my philosophy of life,” Townshend asserted. “There are other things that I want to do, still want to do, and will do, I hope. I hope I’ll live long enough to do them.”

In light of Townshend’s candid revelations, fans around the world are left contemplating the potential end of an era as The Who’s future hangs in the balance. As they wait for further announcements, one thing remains certain: if a farewell tour does materialize, it will undoubtedly be a monumental event in the history of rock music.
