The government of the French-speaking province of Canada, which has been hit hard by the tidal wave of infections caused by Omicron, wants this special “health charge” to be “high”, although it is still under discussion.
According to provincial Prime Minister Franுவாois Lego, 10% of Quebec residents who have not yet been vaccinated should not be “harmed” by 90% of those who have been vaccinated.
“Not all Quebec citizens have to pay for this,” he told a news conference, referring to the province as a “financial burden for all”.
Although unvaccinated adults make up only 10% of the population, they make up 50% of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Lego explained, this is a “shocking” element.
Special contribution does not apply to those who are unable to be vaccinated for medical reasons.
“I understand the minority who have not been vaccinated and I feel very dissatisfied. Proportionately, our hospitals are flooded,” he said.
A few days ago, Quebec officials announced that access to some shops that already sell alcohol and cannabis would be banned.
As in many countries around the world, the pressure on people who are not vaccinated is increasing.
But Quebec, which has re-imposed control measures due to a wave of infections caused by the Omigron variant, is one of the first regions in the world to plan to impose a special tax on those who refuse the vaccine.
In a province with a population of 8 million, hospitals facing chronic staff shortages have been completed. 255 people have been admitted to the intensive care unit of hospitals.
Opposition parties have accused the Quebec government of plotting to evict the provincial population or to “forget” the “vulnerable” population.
The federal government of Canada is also considering providing unemployment benefits to people who refuse to be vaccinated.
