Who Was Angelo Moriondo?

Google celebrated Angelo Moriondo's 171st birthday with a doodle on Monday (June 6).

Angelo Moriondo, born on June 6, 1851, invented the first espresso machine in 1884.

Moriondo's family is in business. His grandfather started a liqueur company that was continued by his father Giacomo.

During Moriondo's time, Italy loved coffee. Still, coffee lovers had to wait a long time for it to brew.

In 1884, Moriondo won a bronze medal for his espresso machine at the General Expo of Turin.

The espresso machine at Moriondo used steam and boiling water to prepare coffee.

The machine employed a big boiler to drive heated water through a bed of coffee grounds, while a second boiler created steam to flash the coffee bed.

The international patent application, filed in Paris on October 23, 1885, confirmed the invention. Moriondo improved his invention, patenting each modification.
