Thousands waiting for gas rebate checks from the state

As gas costs rise, many wait for the checks the state promised to new Mexicans. Many ask when they'll get aid.

The Taxation and Revenue Department received nearly 8,000 calls in one day from consumers wondering about their cheques. They ask for more time.

40,000 people are still waiting for the rebate the governor and legislature approved this year.

New Mexico's Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke said, "We've issued 183,000 paper checks and 39,000 to go. 14,000 checks are issued daily."

730,000 people have gotten their first payments since the governor passed House Bill 2 for $700 million. 547,000 of them filed with direct deposit last year.

Many others have received nothing. That's due in part to late filers or those who didn't file last year and had to file separately.

The state says rebate applications are ended, with 30,000 eligible.

Single filers will receive $500 in two cheques and couples $1,000. August should bring the next round of checks.
