New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu approved a $100 million settlement for victims of physical and sexual abuse at a state-run juvenile facility.
The state legislature approved a deal to create a new fund to settle decades-old abuse claims at the Sununu Youth Services Center.
This law creates a trauma-informed, victim-centered claims resolution process.
No victim must use this process, but it will provide healing and compensation for many.
Victims of sexual abuse with legitimate claims will be eligible for up to $1.5 million, while physical abuse victims will receive $150,000.
Former staff allegedly abused hundreds of teens at the state's juvenile detention centre, named for former Gov. John H. Sununu
Over 450 former residents have sued the state over abuse claims, some dating back to the 1960s.
Democratic lawmakers and victim advocates argued the settlement wasn't enough and should have included emotional abuse victims.
