The 56-year-old was 10ft from the sandy bottom when a humpback whale pulled him up.
"I felt a massive shove, and then everything went black," Packard said.
After the initial shock, he thought he was in a shark's jaws, but he realised he'd been eaten by a whale. He knew his fate.
Michael battled for about a minute inside the 50ft (15m) animal before being expelled back into the ocean.
"I just got thrown in the air and landed in the water. I was free and I just floated there. I couldn't believe... I'm here to tell it."
Beyond dying, it would be heartbreaking to have a story like that but no chance to tell it, wouldn't it?
Mike was transported to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis due to his agonising discomfort.
Fortunately, his legs were not broken, as feared, and he was released the same day - free to tell his epic whale tale.
