Baby Formula Stopped Making Due To Flooding

EleCare production stopped after strong storms inundated its Sturgis, Michigan plant.

This is the same plant that forced Abbott to issue a recall of some of its formulas in February due to contamination issues.

The closing of the largest U.S. baby formula plant, Sturgis, created an industry-wide shortage.

Parents and carers have been scurrying for months as shelves empty. Retailers limited purchases to prevent stockpiling.

The company said the event will likely delay manufacture and shipment of infant formula for a few weeks.

"Once the plant is sterilised, we'll produce EleCare, then specialist and metabolic formulae.

Abbott has exceeded 2021's monthly formula production while the Sturgis plant is closed.

Abbott will update the FDA on plant repairs in the coming days, Califf said. The FDA will then ensure safe production restart.
